Exterior season is over. How does a painting company fill November to March?

Late October in Ottawa. Quillmere Painting, a made-up company with a crew of three, finishes its last exterior of the year: window trim and a front door. The ladders go back on the rack.

That evening, two texts land on the owner's phone. The first one reads: “Do you guys even paint in the winter?”

The second comes from a homeowner across the city. Her house was built in the 1950s, and she wants the living room, the hallway and the stairwell painted before the holidays.

Quillmere and both customers are made up. This post covers where a painting company's winter work comes from, and how to answer the winter question where customers look. It also covers lead paint in an older house, and how next spring's exteriors get booked while there is still snow.

Winter is interior season, and it gets booked in the fall

Exterior work stops when the cold sets in. Interior work can run all winter, as long as each product's conditions are met. Check the label and the data sheet of every product before you promise a date.

PaintPricing, a software company that writes for US painters, puts the timing in one line: “The work you do in January is sold in October”. Here are four places that work can come from:

To check in on those fall quotes, read “Quotes that never get an answer: how to follow up without being pushy”.

The thermometer decides when exterior season ends. You decide when interior season starts.

Answer the question your winter customers type

On October 11, 2026, Google's search suggestions in Ottawa for “interior painting in winter” included “can you paint inside in the winter”. They also included “can you do interior painting in the winter” and “interior painting in cold weather”.

That same day, we searched “can you paint inside in the winter” from Ottawa. The ten links Google showed came from paint brands and stores, forums, and painting companies in other cities. None came from an Ottawa painting company.

So put your answer in two places you control:

  1. A page on your own website for interior painting, answering in your words. Say yes, all winter, and how the rooms stay warm and aired out. Add how long each room is out of use, and a photo from a winter job.
  2. The same service on your Google Business Profile, under its own name.

Google's help page “Manage your services on your Business Profile” explains why the second one matters. When nearby customers search Google for a service you offer, it says “that service may be highlighted on your profile”. In the Google Maps app, customers can see your full list under “Services”.

The same page says “Custom services that violate policy will be automatically rejected”. Its list of what to keep out of custom service names includes prices and phone numbers.

For the rest of the profile, read “Google Business Profile for contractors: the fields almost nobody fills in”.

An interior painting page is a page beyond your home page, and a phone visitor still needs a call or quote button at the top. The free check reads both on your own site. Leave your business name, town and email in its second step, and it compares your Google review count with the median of others in your category.

Older homes and lead paint

Back to the 1950s house. Health Canada's page on lead-based paint, dated October 2, 2026, says: “Your home probably contains lead-based paint if it was built before 1960”. The same page explains how to check for lead, which tools not to use to remove it, and when leaving it alone is safer. Read it before you quote an older interior.

Why it matters more in winter: the family is often home and the windows stay shut. So the prep plan for an older house belongs on the quote.

Ontario's labour ministry has a guideline, “Lead on construction projects”, that sorts lead work into classes by expected exposure. Its lowest class includes stripping with a chemical gel or paste and a fibrous laminated cloth wrap, or with a power tool that has an effective HEPA dust collection system. Scraping or sanding by hand sits higher.

Its highest classes include burning a surface that contains lead, and abrasive blasting. Power tools without an effective HEPA dust collection system are there too. The guideline says it does not replace Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, and that it is not legal advice.

Two habits for the quote: ask the year the house was built when the request comes in, and write the prep method on the quote. That is practice, not law.

Commercial repaints: winter work that doesn't wait for the weather

Offices, stores, clinics, and the hallways and stairwells of condo and apartment buildings can be painted in January as well as in June. The people who decide are property managers, condo boards and building owners.

Two questions are worth asking them before the holidays. When does your budget year close? When is the space empty: evenings, weekends, the holiday closure?

If you also work in Gatineau, the City's summary of its noise by-law covers construction, renovation and demolition sites within 150 metres of housing. On those sites, work may run only Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Outside those hours, the City's executive committee must authorize the work. Whether a quiet interior repaint counts as such a site is the City's call. Check with the City first if you plan work there before 7 a.m., after 9 p.m. or on a Sunday.

Planning evening or weekend work in Ottawa? Check the City's own noise rules first.

Book next spring's exteriors in January

When a request for exterior work comes in over the winter, treat it like a summer one. Walk the house, then send a written quote with a start window, not a “call me in April”.

Past customers can hear from you before spring too, as long as they agreed to it.

Painters can also look at Google's Local Services Ads. Google's Canada page lists Painter among the 36 home services eligible for its Google Verified badge. It says you only pay “when potential customers get in touch through your ads”. Check that the ads are offered for your area when you sign up.

When UrbanTechFlow sets up a follow-up system for a painting company like yours, the quote requests from your website land in one unified app. The system includes seasonal reminders: texts and emails to your past customers who agreed to hear from you. We write them with you, and anyone can stop them with one reply.

Across the river in Gatineau

If you also take jobs in Gatineau, Quebec's workplace safety board, the CNESST, has a prevention guide on lead exposure (April 22, 2024, in French). It recommends checking for lead in four situations:

The guide adds that the employer should check before the work starts, or treat the paint as lead-based.

What we will update, and when

We read every source listed below on October 11, 2026. Every three months, we re-read Health Canada's page, Ontario's guideline, the CNESST guide, Gatineau's noise summary and Google's two pages on services and Local Services Ads.

When one of them changes, or when Gatineau changes its noise by-law, we add a dated update line to this post. Ottawa's construction noise hours get their own dated line once we have checked every part of the City's rules on construction noise, weekends included.

Questions painters ask

How do painters fill the slow season?

From four places: the quotes from the fall that never got an answer, past customers who mentioned another room, commercial repaints, and homeowners who ask whether painting inside in winter works. Quote next spring's exteriors as the requests come in.

A customer asks if you paint inside in the winter. What do you say?

Yes, interior work can run all winter. Check each product's label and data sheet for the conditions it needs, and plan heat and fresh air with the customer.

Can a painter sand old paint in an older house?

Not without a plan. Ontario's guideline puts power tools without effective HEPA dust collection in its highest exposure classes. For jobs in Gatineau, the CNESST guide recommends checking for lead before sanding in a building built before 1975.

When should next spring's exterior jobs be quoted?

When the request comes in, all winter long, with a start window written on the quote.
